Congratulations, Gary, for your excellent finish on Lake Wheeler over the weekend! Many readers will be eager to know which baits you had success with on Lake Wheeler. Can you please share your tactics with us, Gary?
Hello to everyone, and thank you for your congratulations! Yes, I used the one ounce football jig with a two-sided 11-Series skirt on it, plus a 12-Series double tail grub trailer behind the skirt. I shortened the grub body by cutting it back a bit. The 12-Series is a large grub, and the shortened body seemed to appeal better to the fish I was catching, which were spotted bass on Lake Wheeler.
Both the #11 skirt and #12 trailer were cinnamon with purple and black flakes in it, which is color #221.
Please share with us a little about the fishing conditions and the areas that you fished on Lake Wheeler, Gary.
I fished the one ounce football jig in deeper water from 15 to 20 feet, primarily on underwater ledges.
On the pre-fish days, I did not find many spots that held biting fish. I think the weather conditions kept the fish turned off in many parts of the lake. So I stayed primarily in one general location throughout the tournament where there were a few active biters to be had.
This area was shared with a lot of other anglers fishing the same general location. I was impressed with the courtesy and respect shown by anglers fishing close together at times.
I can say I enjoyed fishing Lake Wheeler, even if the weather and fish did not cooperate very much, the anglers did! It was a great tournament, and I enjoyed it very much.
This was the third time I have fished Lake Wheeler, and I look forward to fishing here again soon! - Gary Yamamoto.
