| __________________________________________________ August 5, 2003 - Vol. 4 No. 30 __________________________________________________ THE BACKWARD FAT IKA Originally, the very first Ika was what a bass left you after it had torn the curly tail legs off a Yamamoto Hula Grub - a grub torso and Medusa's skirted head. Super sharpies would secretly reverse rig their legless Hula Grubs with skirt to back - as if solid-bodied tube baits. Eureka! The Ika was born. Today, Yamamoto's unique Ika series offers five different models. The "Fat Ika" is the most recent yet the most popular model - and for good reason (it catches). A secretive (until today) way to rig the Fat Ika is to re-reverse rig it "backwards" with skirt to front again (as in the original legless hula grub). Last week I took Derek out after his physical therapy. Starting at 12:30 pm until dusk, we lipped 56 bass! All on Senkos," says Captain TJ Fagan of On Target Bassin Guide Service. "We threw a few colors, but we truly slayed them on rainbow trout." Next trip, another half-day, we caught 65. We were running out of rainbow trout. Derek had just caught and released a nice four pound chunk. Suddenly I hear a thump, and my Ranger boat lurches to the right. I look back at Derek wondering what the heck? He's on his belly, his upper torso stretched out over the right side of the boat over the water. Dripping wet from his head to his waist, I thought he fell and toppled overboard. A guide's nightmare. Seeing my inquisitive stare, he just shrugs and matter-of-factly says: "I dropped my rainbow trout Senko overboard...I got it back."
