In addition to any other precautions you may take, one practice that provides peace of mind is to leave a "paper trail" as to where you are going to fish. Keep a small yellow sticky note pad in the glove compartment, and stick one sheet inside the windshield whenever you launch the boat. Write where you will be, what time you left and when you plan to return. Something as simple as "In back of Cold Creek Bay, 11 AM back at 5PM," will do it. Even if you plan to stay near by, post a note on the windshield. It can be just as cold if you are unable to make it a short haul back, and a search party could easily overlook you if they have no clue where to begin. __________________________________________________ TURN ONE WINTER BASS INTO TWO One of the most productive ways to excite bass into action is to hook and play one fish. Even in the coldest water of winter, other bass cannot resist chasing a hooked one. It may take a painstakingly slow-moving presentation to get that first fish to bite. Once that has been accomplished, a second angler should throw a faster-moving reaction bait like a crankbait behind the path being traversed by the hooked fish. Even if a chaser bass was not seen, one is often there and highly motivated to bite during the chase sequence. A team of anglers deliberately working in concert like this can often turn solo winter bass into double hook-ups. __________________________________________________ EUROPEAN BASS FISHING SCENE: MEDITERRANEAN With winter raging just beyond your front door, we thought we'd warm you with some news of the balmy Mediterranean.
